Costa de la Luz is also favorably known as the coast of light. It is located at the furthest point south of the Spanish coast and the favorite spot of many visitors. Its nickname is apt with the Atlantic waves gushing onto the shores. It is located in Huelva and Cadiz provinces, with its coast spanning from Tarifa, a paradise for windsurfing, to Taguas near Portugal to the west.

Attractive Setting

This coast of light offers great clean beaches with a countryside spilling over from pine trees and uniquely charming fishing villages in the midst of serenity. Its weather is mild and there is an authentic feel of a Spanish village with its low buildings. Even its hotel offerings are low rises to complement the natural beauty.

The beauty of this place includes the sand offered on its beaches that is finer than anywhere else in Spain. However, the winds are strong and can be felt every day, so this is a favorite spot for wind sports, drawing enthusiasts from everywhere in the world.

There are many quaint villages and major towns along the coast that are worth visiting; the major ones are Cadiz, Huelva, Barbate, Chipiona, Zahara de las Atunes, Conil, Tarifa and Matalscanas.

Cadiz

Cadiz and Huelva are this region’s major towns with the former being the more historic of the two. Its historic charm is divided into modern and old sections; the former relates to a modern lifestyle while the older one reveals the past history of the place. The old quarter is characteristic of Andalusia flavors, such as a fishing district. Cadiz celebrates many carnivals every year with days of processions through the streets and astounding partying in the town.

Accommodation ranges from budget to up market and is strategically located at either the town center or near the beach.


Huelva

Huelva city may not seem much of an attraction, but it offers great unspoiled beaches. There are many natural parks for nature lovers surrounding this city. There are many popular places to stay that were formerly very ancient buildings and have been carefully renovated to preserve their medieval structure.

Barbate

This is a charming fishing village that gives easy access to the region’s best beaches and nature parks. The exciting aspect in this town has to be its numerous eateries serving its famous fresh fish and other seafood dishes.

Chipiona

Chipiona has grown in popularity as a beautiful Spanish tourist resort with its clean sandy beaches. It is a popular family holiday destination offering lots of backstreet discoveries and cheap fresh fish and tapas bars.

Zahara de las Atunes

Coupled with its lovely beach is the charm of this tiny town that lacks high rise buildings. This typical fishing village is the region’s major tuna producer.

Matalscanas

Although this town has lower tourism figures, it offers lovely sandy beaches and nature parks. Surprisingly, there are 4-star hotels that offer a panoramic view over the Atlantic in a serene residential neighborhood. The hotels offer golfing, airport shuttle transport, live entertainment and lovely beaches.

Conil

Conil fishing village is serene and its restaurants serve its famous gamba blanca, which is a prawn delicacy, as well as other seafood catches.

Pine trees line this serene village overlooking the virgin beach.

Tarifa

Tarifa is the windiest town in Europe; its natural wonder is captured in wind farms and there are wind sports and activities in this region.

Fishing trips, boat rides, wind surfing, kite flying and even whale watching are some delights that Tarifa offers.
